About the Learning Commons

The Learning Commons is a dynamic and active feature of the Library’s efforts to meet the needs of the university community. In order to facilitate the creation of a learning commons, the following principles have guided the planning for the reconfiguration of the existing Zach S. Henderson Library building and the addition:

· A Place for Active Learning · A Place Designed to Put Users First · An Adaptable Place · A Functional Place

· A Borderless, Integrated, Efficient Place · A Place Where Noise is Managed · A Safe and Secure Place

The Georgia Southern community is able to conduct library research, type and print reports, utilize multimedia production software and hardware, and seek computer assistance (e.g., WebCT, WINGS, MyGeorgiaSouthern.edu, wireless access) from one locationAdditionally, multimedia equipment (e.g, video camera, digital camera, and projectors) is available for checkout.

Group collaboration (e.g. student/student or faculty/student) is one of the many activities we're promoting in the Learning Commons. Library users can practice their presentations or project study notes on the backs of the furniture in the Learning  Commons. Furthermore, you will be able to rehearse presentations in the Presentation Room located on the first floor. Library users can study individually throughout the library or use one of 28 group study rooms. Three of the 28 group study rooms are designated for graduate students only. The Presentation Room and graduate study rooms are available upon reservation and key checkout from the Circulation Desk while the others are available on a first come first serve basis.

There are computers located on the 1st and 3rd floors away from the Learning Commons. And the building is wireless for those with personal laptops or laptops borrowed from the library. Remember, first and second floors are "noisy" floors where group study and conversations at normal voice levels are allowed. If you need somewhere quiet to study, try third or fourth floors.

Naming of the Learning Commons

On December 1, 2009, the Learning Commons was named the Bruce and Kathyrn Grube Learning Commons in recognition of their achievements during the last ten and a half years as Georgia Southern's 11th president and first lady. Dr. Bruce Grube has been president of the University since July 1, 1999. On November 24, 2008, he announced that he would step down as President effective June 30, 2009. He agreed to serve until December 31, 2009 when the search for a new president went more slowly than anticipated. Beginning January 1, 2010 he will begin an educational leave, and then return to the classroom as a professor of Political Science at Georgia Southern University during the 2011-2012 academic year. In addition, he will serve as a mentor and consultant to newer university presidents within the University System of Georgia. During his tenure at Georgia Southern University, the institution experienced its greatest growth in the university's history in academic quality and physical facilities. Before joining Georgia Southern University, he was the president of St. Cloud State University in St. Cloud, Minnesota. He served as provost at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona and at Colorado State University, Pueblo.
